Tamil film Va Vaathiyar started its journey slowly at the box office. Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, this film took an opening of just Rs 20 crore. 1.75 crore at the Indian box office. This amounts to approximately Rs. meet. 1.5 crore from their home ground, while Rest of India collected around Rs. Contributed. 25 lakhs.
Backed by KE Gnanavel Raja under Studio Green, the film received mixed responses among audiences and critics, which must have been worrying for the producers. Had the film starring Karthi received a positive response, there would have been some hope for the film’s business. A major reason for such a slow start of the film was the lack of pre-release buzz among the audience. Just a week before Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayakan got postponed, the film was suddenly announced to release on Pongal 2026.
Since the festival season is still on, the film should aim for a good growth in the extended opening weekend. If it manages to achieve the promising charm, only then can it put up a respectable score by the end of its theatrical run.

Va Vaathiyar is an action-comedy that tells the story of DSP Rameswaran, a corrupt police officer, who lives a life contrary to his grandfather’s wishes by adopting the honesty and values of late MGR, as the grandfather believes his grandson to be the reincarnation of MGR.
Apart from Karthi, the film also stars Kriti Shetty, Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Nizhalgal Ravi, Anandraj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran and many others in important roles.
