Vivek Agnihotri Director Bengal files It was seen as a new controversy, as Shantinu Mukherjee, the grandson of the famous Bengali freedom fighter Gopal Mukherjee, filed a police complaint against the filmmaker. The complaint comes in response to the trailer of Agnihotri’s upcoming political drama, unveiling on 16 August, which matches the 80th anniversary of “Great Calcutta killings”, also known as ‘Direct Action Day’.
Vivek Agnihotri faced an FIR on the alleged wrong bayani of freedom fighter Gopal Mukherjee in the new film trailer
According to Shantinu Mukherjee, the film wrongly portrayed his grandfather, called “Kashai” (meaning vassal “) and” Patha “(which means goat), he describes the words as deeply derogatory. “My grandfather was an important person in the freedom movement, working with prominent leaders, tied up with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose with his ideology. Not only is historically wrong to label him in such derogatory words, but also for our family and community,” India said in a statement today.
In protest, Shantanu has sent a legal notice to Vivek Agnihotri and filed a formal FIR, demanding a public apology. He expressed disappointment that the filmmaker failed to consult the family or verified historical facts before the release of the trailer. “I think Vivek Agnihotri should do more research on this. Where did he get this wrong information? They have not contacted us. So we are protesting and will continue to do so,” he said.
The film, which is the third installment in Agnihotri’s “Files Trilogy” Tashkent files (2019) and Kashmir files (2022), revolves around the great Calcutta murders and Nokhali riots of 1949. It wants to portray events as a genocide and highlights how these historical atrocities were reportedly silenced or ignored in mainstream narratives. The release of the trailer on the anniversary of the tragedy has added emotional weight and acute public investigation.
Film analysts note that Agnihotri’s projects often argue for their depiction of historical events, and this latest controversy outlines the sensitivity around the depiction of real -life freedom fighters. Historians and community leaders have erupted Shantanu’s concerns, emphasizing the importance of storytelling responsible while representing the figures that play an important role in India’s independence movement.
The controversy raises important questions about the responsibility of filmmakers to consult families and historians before pretending historical events. Will the controversy lead to editing in the film or a formal waiver remains to be seen, but the FIR and legal notice indicate that the debate is only the beginning.
