Later, friend Norman Lear and family, who greatly respected Rainer, shared a note mourning his passing. “The Lear family is devastated by the death of Rob and Michelle Renner. Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary to us and the world. Norman wanted to remind us that Rob and Michelle spent every breath of their life trying to make this country a better place, and they carried that forward through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends. Lynn Lear had been very close to them and He said, ‘The world has definitely become darker tonight, and we are left bereft.’
