In the wake of the tragic demise of renowned Assam singer Zubeen Garg, the organizers of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) have announced the postponement of its 10th edition. The film festival, originally scheduled for December 4-7, 2025, will now be held in 2026 as a sign of respect during the period of mass mourning.
Zubeen Garg death: Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival postponed as Assam mourns its cultural icon
According to the festival statement, “It is with a heavy heart that the 10th edition of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival, originally scheduled for December 4-7, 2025, has been postponed to a later date in 2026. The decision comes as Assam mourns the demise of its most beloved cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, whose voice and vision defined generations. BVFF People And stands in solidarity with the creative community.”
He further added, “As a festival deeply rooted in the cultural and emotional fabric of this land, we feel it is right to pause our festivities this year in remembrance and respect. We are deeply grateful for the continued support and understanding of our filmmakers, partners and audiences. Refunds for all submissions will be processed in due course by the BVFF team.”
The decision had a deep resonance in Assam, where Zubeen Garg was considered more of a symbol of cultural pride than an artist. His death in Singapore earlier this year has sparked widespread grief, protests and an intense investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Meanwhile, swift action has been seen on the legal and investigation fronts. Authorities have arrested five persons, including the festival organiser, Garg’s manager, his cousin (a police officer) and his security personnel and sent them to 14-day judicial custody.
Tension prevailed outside Baksa District Jail when a crowd gathered and allegedly threw stones and slippers at the police convoy and set fire to several vehicles nearby.
The BVFF organizers’ move to postpone the festival underlines the magnitude of the loss: the creative community in Assam is not just stopping an event, but collectively mourning a man whose legacy transcended the stage. More details regarding rescheduled dates and refunds are expected in the coming months.
