In an important development after the tragic demise of famous Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the authorities arrested his manager, Siddharth Sharma, and Shyamakunu Mahanta, the main organizer of the North East India Festival (NEIF), in connection with the incident. Garg died on 19 September after an incident of drowning in Lajar Island in Singapore.

Mahnta was arrested on his arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi from Singapore on his arrival, while Sharma was arrested from an apartment in Gurugram. Both persons were later brought to Guwahati to question. The Assam government formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of Special DGP MP Gupta to investigate the circumstances around Garg’s death. The SIT had issued notices to several persons, in which Mahata, Sharma, members of the Singapore Assam Association and those who attended the festival requested them to make a statement.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier confirmed that a lookout notice was issued against Mahata and Sharma through Interpol, directing them to present them before the CID by 6 October. After his arrest, both were sent to 14 days police custody. Mahata was stopped at the Delhi airport around midnight, while Sharma was arrested at Gurugram toll plaza during a visit from Rajasthan to Delhi.
In Assam’s music scene, a dear person Zubeen Garg traveled to Singapore to perform in the neph, which was later canceled due to his sudden death. He was cremated on 23 September with full state honor in Kamup district of Assam, in which thousands of fans gathered to pay their honors to the singer.
