29 trailer out

Rathna Kumar is back in Meyaadha Maan and is all set to release his much-awaited Tamil drama film 29 soon. Produced by Karthik Subbaraj, Karthakeyen Santhanam and Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film promises a soulful yet serious exploration of what it means to be lost in your twenties.

The 2 minute 33 second trailer opens with a cheeky satire on dating apps, claiming it will take viewers back to the early 2010s, when such apps didn’t exist. The film is based on the life of Satya, played by Vidhu, a 29-year-old man suffering from a severe identity crisis. At this age a normal society wants to ‘settle down’. But Satya, the vagabond that he is, has no clear ambitions or dreams.

Before he gets into the trap of marriage and kids, he wants to know who he really is. A major turning point in his life comes when a 21-year-old, determined and ambitious woman, Vijayalakshmi aka Viji (played by Preeti Asrani) enters his life. She works tirelessly to make ends meet so that she can fulfill her dreams of becoming an IAS officer.

The film is based on the brilliant personalities of two characters. While Satya is aimless, Viji is hell-bent on making her dreams come true. But as life happens, opposite personalities fall in love with each other. The trailer showcases the difficult emotional journey of the lovers, where their relationship is tested by social pressure and other realities of growing up.

While Vidhu and Preeti Kumar lead the drama, they are joined by actors like Mahendran, Avinash, Shehnaz Fathima and Prem Kumar in lead roles. While Ratna primarily called the film a romance drama, he told The Hindu that there are things like self-discovery that become the core of his film. “This will be a film that will give you a lot of hope,” he said at a promotional event. 29 is scheduled to release in theaters on May 8, 2026.
