Thanks to affordable internet and the rise of social media, information spreads faster than ever. However, the flip side is that fake news and disinformation also have the potential to spread like wildfire. Leading actress Anupriya Goenka experienced this last week when an Instagram handle named ‘Sarcastic Tube’ put up a post quoting her. The alleged quote claimed that an actor lost control and crossed all limits while shooting an intimate scene with her. The post further claimed that Anupriya was not able to understand what was happening during the scene. The surprising thing is that Anupriya never gave any such statement. She immediately called out the prank page on her Instagram story and criticized them for their behavior. It’s been seven days since the controversial post was uploaded and it’s still up on the page. At the time of publishing this article, the post was still visible on the Instagram handle and had not been removed despite the actress tagging the page and clarifying that she had never made any such quote.
Exclusive: Anupriya Goenka slams fake Instagram post on intimate scene, claims: “Who will cross all limits? I have a mind of my own…It paints such a weak picture of a woman”
Recently spoke to Anupriya Goenka specially for IIZ: Indian Institute of Zombies. When asked about this controversial post and whether she plans to take legal action against the handle, Anupriya said, “I don’t want to do that, because I don’t want to put that much energy into it. I don’t even know why and where it came from. I had said something about intimate scenes in an interview 2 years ago. Even then, I was misquoted. If you pick up a line separately from an interview and make it a headline, it puts my whole story behind the conversation. “Sounds very different than intended.”
She further added, “Even in that interview, I clearly said that, for the most part, I have very comfortable co-stars. The journalist kept asking me about it, and I said there was one instance where I had an issue and I told that person that I was not comfortable. Otherwise, on our sets, at least as per my experience, it has been a very safe environment. When you say something, the other person will definitely listen and understand whether you are comfortable or not. Most directors are very, very sensitive, and so are the co-actors.”
She added, “The idea was to focus on agency, that is, being aware of what you want to do and what you don’t want to do, being very open about it, and not feeling pressured to do something you’re not comfortable with. But it was communicated in a way that felt like someone took advantage of me. It’s very strange. I didn’t talk that way. Still, it didn’t feel as bad as it did in that Instagram post. It said, ‘She crossed all boundaries. Gave.’ Who will cross all limits? And why would I say, ‘I didn’t know what was going on?’ I have a mind of my own; Why didn’t I know what was going on? Who talks like that?”
Anupriya commented, “It portrays such a weak image of a woman, that ‘I am so weak, someone can come and take advantage of me, I can’t do anything and now I regret it.’
She concluded, “I’m not planning on taking any action. I’ve said what I had to say.”
