I read for the part. I was traveling at that time, so it was an online test on the zoom. I was given a scene on the spot to read, and I believe my director Danish Renu decided to cast me after reading that.
Pronunciation and body language must have done a lot. How much did Noor Begum go?
To decide what the character needs physically to decide between Danish and me. He wanted him to have an accent to reflect the socio-economic background. If she had talked to Urdu, she would have a huge pronunciation. I was hesitant-it is always a toss-up because you risk a caricature. This was a scary option, but I am happy that I tried. I will do it wrong instead of not trying it at all.
You have never taken an easy road as an actor. How much conflict is there for a rule-breaker to place your head over water in this jackfruit industry?
The actor is at the mercy of someone else’s imagination, so we are limited by what we offer. Within him, my base line has always been- “Does it encourage me?” This is the driving force behind most of my likes. It also helps to be on the set is the end in myself, not a means of end.
It has been seventeen years in films. Do you think OTT platforms have given your talent a comprehensive audience?
Yes, of course. OTT has been a shot for so many actors and technicians. I am grateful to the opportunities that have been brought to me. It looked like a reaction to the boundaries of box office-driven writing. Many of us who were not in the race for Friday’s box-office were noticed at that time. Oat changed my career for better.
How difficult is it to date the mainstream actor and make headlines when you do not enjoy attention clearly?
I think I am very good for an introvert.
As someone has seen the industry clearly, will you advise optimistic from outside to try your luck?
It depends on what kind of luck is looking for. If you are anything like me and your enjoyment starts on the set and ends, then every day you are working, it will look meaningful. This is not easy, and the rejection is part of the course – but the flexibility pays more and more often.
What are you working on now?
I have two films and a show is ready for release. I start shooting for a series in November this, about which I am very excited. Along with this, I continue to music and tour with both my bands – Madboy/Mink and Ullou.
