The petition titled Karan Johar vs Ashok Kumar/John Do and ORS comes soon after Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, who protected both of the court orders to save their names and images from exploitation.

During the hearing on Monday, Rao said that Johar’s photos were being downloaded and broadcast in various online platforms, some social media pages were also working under his name. According to Rao, Johar has the right to decide how and where his personality is used commercially. He emphasized that the filmmaker’s decision does not work first, does not allow others to take advantage of his identity.

On behalf of the meta platforms, who owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, advocate Varun Pathak warned against a comprehensive order. He argued that many flagged positions were general comments or jokes made by fans, not infamous or malicious materials. A blanket prohibition, reader, said, “Open the door for excessive litigation, in which everyday fan conversations can be dragged into court.”

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora noticed that the court needed to make careful differences between despair, memes, fan content and lump sum commercial exploitation. The judge clarified that each fan page cannot be ordered to close or take offline. Instead, the court asked Johar’s team to identify especially accounts or websites, who misuse their personality for profit.

The court indicated that it could issue a targeted take-down order against such violations, while Johar allows Jauhar to return to court or approach platforms such as meta-like meta or approach platforms in case of future violations. The matter is listed on 15 September for further consideration.

If provided, Johar’s petition will further strengthen the growing legal trend among Bollywood celebrities to protect its image rights against unauthorized use in the digital and business market.
