Bollywood playback singer Kumar Sanu, also known as Sanu Bhattacharjee, has filed a Rs 50 crore defamation suit in the Bombay High Court against his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya and online platforms like Google and Meta over her allegedly damaging interviews and social media comments.

The petition, filed through advocate Sana Rais Khan, targets September 2025 YouTube interviews on channels like Film Window, Viral Bhayani and Siddharth Kannan, where Bhattacharya made false claims about Sanu’s conduct during their marriage, through clips and reels that have garnered over 1.5 million views. Sanu, with the urgent interim relief application listed before Justice Milind Jadhav on December 24, wants a permanent injunction to stop further publication, removal of existing content and a direction to Bhattacharya to issue a written apology in the court and newspapers.
The singer has claimed damages of Rs 15 crore for commercial impacts like canceled shows and suspended advertisements, Rs 10 crore for damage to reputation, Rs 15 crore for mental agony and Rs 10 crore as punitive damages. “The defamatory comments have placed unfair imputations on Sanu’s integrity and credibility, resulting in a significant decline in professional inquiries and engagement opportunities,” he claimed in his lawsuit.
Sanu alleges that this has rekindled the complaints after 32 years of separation, thereby violating the terms of their 2001 Bandra Family Court consent decree barring mutual recriminations: “This conduct is a willful and willful breach of the terms of the consent entered into at the time of divorce, amounting to contempt of court and breach of contract.”
Amid a surge in abusive social media comments, some videos were removed following a legal notice, in which Sanu cited a prior Delhi High Court order protecting her personality rights. The lawsuit also names “John Doe” entities for future blocks.
Sanu and Bhattacharya married in the late 1980s, had three children – Jiko, Jassi and Jaan – before divorcing. Sanu, famous for hit films of the 1990s Lover, my heart doesn’t agree, And Sajan, Earlier, his affair with Bigg Boss 19 contestant actress Kunika Sadanand was publicized.
