The traveller, identified as Meike Heijmans from the Netherlands, was exploring rural India alone when she reached a village in Haryana and came across a woman working in a field. Mike asked if she could pitch her tent in that area for the night, hoping for just a simple camping spot. However, the woman did not understand English, so she called her nephew Tushar Gurjar to help her negotiate.
“I asked a family in rural India if I could camp in their garden,” the video was captioned on her Instagram account, which has more than 56,000 followers.
The family insisted that he come inside their house for safety and comfort instead of camping outside. In a video shared on YouTube, Meike was seen “chilling” and interacting with family members. He was given tea, home-cooked food and a place to rest for the night.
This sweet gesture was liked by users on the social media platform. Many praised the simple and sincere hospitality shown, calling it a living example of India’s welcoming culture.
One user wrote, ‘I am 100% sure that they did not allow you to pitch a tent, but they must have given you space inside their house.’
Another commented, “I love rural India.”
A third said, “Please stay safe during your trip. If possible, consider hotels, and if you want to try the camping experience, there are some beautiful and safe camping spots in India. We really respect you and care about your safety – welcome to India.”
A fourth said, “From personal experience, Haryana is the best place for great hospitality. They take care of their guests with a good heart.”
