One of the most exciting releases of Malayalam cinema, Patriot, hit the theaters this weekend. Marking the comeback of Mammootty and Mohanlal together after 18 years, the espionage thriller debuted with Rs. According to initial estimates, it earned Rs 11.35 crore at the Indian box office.
Out of this approximately Rs. 8.25 crore came from Kerala alone. This is about 70 percent of his total domestic collection. The film grossed approximately Rs. Rs 1.60 crore from Karnataka. 75 lakhs from Tamil Nadu. Rest of the Indian markets collected around Rs. Contributed. 75 lakhs to the tally.
Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the espionage thriller recorded the second highest opening for a Malayalam film at the Indian box office. It was left behind only by the opening day collections of L2 Empuraan. The film is expected to register another strong day on Saturday as the progress is on the positive side.
Based on current trends, the Mammootty starrer should aim to earn more than Rs. 20 crore mark in Kerala by the end of its opening weekend. The first weekend all India collection should exceed Rs. The figure of 25 crores. The film should aim to challenge the top grossing films of Malayalam cinema. So far, the word-of-mouth mix among audiences seems to be positive. It will be interesting to see where it ultimately lands.
