The Delhi High Court on Friday sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to three months’ simple imprisonment in a check bounce case, noting that he repeatedly failed to honor the settlement commitments made before the court. Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma delivered the judgment in a batch of seven cases filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. While Yadav was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in each case, the court directed that all the sentences would run concurrently.
Rajpal Yadav sentenced to three months jail in check bounce case; Delhi HC repeatedly cited omissions
Apart from the jail sentence, the High Court ordered the actor to pay Rs 1.05 crore in each of the seven cases. His wife Radha Rajpal Yadav was also directed to pay a fine of more than ₹5 lakh in each case.
Court cites repeated failure to honor commitments
During the proceedings, the court said that Yadav was given several opportunities to resolve the dispute and pay the dues but failed to fulfill the assurances given before the court. Explaining the judgment, Justice Sharma said, “Opportunities were given to honor the agreement. He (Yadav) and his counsel made several statements and assurances, and despite these repeated opportunities and assurances, he failed to honor the undertakings.”
The judge also gave Yadav two months to challenge the order in the higher court.
The case is related to the punishment of 2024
The legal dispute has been going on for more than two years. In May 2024, a sessions court had convicted Yadav in a check bounce case and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment.
The Delhi High Court later suspended the sentence after the actor’s legal team assured the court that the matter would be resolved amicably. The dispute was later referred to the Delhi High Court Mediation Center in an attempt to reach a resolution.
However, despite several postponements and repeated assurances, an agreement could not be reached. The high court found that Yadav had failed to deposit several amounts which he had pledged to pay, including Rs 2.5 crore, for which he had sought permission to pay in instalments.
First surrender and interim relief
In February 2026, the High Court directed Yadav to surrender before jail authorities after finding that he had failed to comply with its earlier directions. His request for additional time to surrender was also rejected.
The actor finally surrendered on February 5 and remained in custody pending interim suspension of the sentence after depositing Rs 1.5 crore with the complainant.
