Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is preparing for another crime drama based on the history of Mumbai. According to industry sources, the director is in preliminary discussions to make a biographical film based on famous Mumbai encounter expert Daya Nayak.

The project is said to be in the development stage, with talks currently focused on shaping the script and determining the narrative approach. Sources also reveal that a major studio is expected to back the film.
Script in development
Industry insiders told Mid-Day that the idea of a Daya Nayak biopic has been in the works for some time, but the project has gained momentum in recent months. A source familiar with the development said, “The idea has been around for some time, but there has been fresh movement on it in recent months. Right now, the priority is to get the script right and decide the lens through which Daya Nayak’s story should be told.”
The makers are reportedly evaluating different ways to present the hero’s journey, which remains one of the most talked-about stories in Mumbai policing history.
Possible link to company franchise
Interestingly, the possibility of linking the proposed film with Varma’s acclaimed film has also been discussed company Universe.
According to another insider, the filmmaker once considered the idea of a sequel to his 2002 gangster drama Company. The proposed project is tentatively called company 2The hope was to focus on encounter specialists rather than gangsters.
The source revealed, “In 2010, there were talks about fitting it organically into the bigger world company. Although nothing has been decided yet, this has come up during the discussions.
The insider further claimed that Daya Nayak was expected to act as an advisor during those initial talks.
As of now, there has been no final decision as to whether the biopic will serve as a standalone project or be a part of a larger cinematic universe.
The reported development comes at a time when Ram Gopal Varma is back in the limelight with several ambitious projects.
