Saiyaara has closed its international box office race, except in a country where it always brings collections. The ninth week of the film will bring about 30k USD, most of which will come from… Sri Lanka. In fact, this week’s collections in Sri Lanka will be more than those of India.
The musical love story YRF, made by Mohit Suri, reported USD 19.85 million (Rs. 172 crores) abroad, missing USD 20 million by only one hair. From a modest opening day of USD 475K and an opening weekend of USD 2.10 million, the film displayed an extraordinary multiple of almost 10 times. With Rs. 396 India crores added, global crude will end at Rs. 568 crores.
Saiyaara has performed well at all levels, but the United Kingdom and the Middle East are distinguished among the main markets. In the United Kingdom, it ranks like the second largest Indian film of all time, collecting 3.22 million GB, while in the Middle East, it has become the largest non-Khan star of all time. Then there are smaller markets that shone from Nepal to the Netherlands in Norway and, of course, in Sri Lanka. In Lanka, it is the second biggest Bollywood film of all time, only behind Jawan, who had the additional advantage of a popular Tamil director.
The box office abroad is generally motivated by the nominal value, whether via Star Power, a marquee director or a franchise brand. Saiyaara was nothing of these. It had two complete new arrivals and a director whose previous summit abroad was barely 3 million USD. Films with such a profile have marked great in India, but almost never abroad. At home, Saiyaara was a blockbuster that lost steam after ten days, but abroad, he turned into a marathon, maintained week after week and evolved these remarkable summits.
The territorial rupture for the box office abroad of Saiyaara is as follows:
