Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumari saw a rise of 17 to 20 per cent with discount on Tuesday taking Rs. Its total earning is Rs 1.35 crore. While the 60 per cent decline compared to last Tuesday is considered acceptable, the important issue remains the overall low base of its collections. The total earning of the film was Rs. Earned Rs 51.85 crore at the Indian box office.
This is not a good figure for a star-studded film. Although at one time it seemed that the film would lag far behind Rs. The figure of 50 crores. Considering the average buzz the film garnered among the audience, this is a pretty good figure. Buy-one-get-one offers on weekdays and holiday periods helped it reach this figure. However, this won’t change the fate of the Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor starrer, which was sealed in its opening weekend. It is expected that with the arrival of the film Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat around Rs. 55 crore nett.
The rom-com genre and midstream films in general are struggling in the post-pandemic times. One major reason for this is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. There are some films which got good appreciation and success, but still did not get as good scores as they used to get earlier. Jolly LLB 3 and Sitare Zameen Par are two prime examples from this year.
The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, forcing audiences to simply wait for streaming releases. The makers need time to extend the deadline to around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
