Just days after India’s official Oscar entry, homeboundAfter failing to garner a final nomination at the 98th Academy Awards, filmmaker Karan Johar has announced his temporary departure from social media. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, January 27, the creator revealed he was embarking on a week-long “digital detox” to remove himself from the noise of the online world.

In a candid post shared with his followers, Johar wrote: “Digital detox for a week! No doom scrolls! No DMs! No posts! May the universe give me the strength to stay away!!!”
The announcement comes at a busy time for the Dharma Productions chief. While the filmmaker was recently celebrating the huge box-office success of Bollywood’s latest hits, stalwart And border 2Last week also brought disappointment regarding the Oscar nominations.
Homebound, a social drama directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and backed by Johar, was a strong contender, even making the top-15 shortlist in December. However, when the final five nominees for Best International Feature Film were announced on January 22, the film was notably absent.
Despite the snub, Johar publicly stood by his director and wrote on social media last week, “Proud!!! Love you Neeraj Ghaywan for giving us a chance to enjoy your light!” He described the film as “one of the finest and most important films India has ever made”.
While Johar did not explicitly link his break to the Oscars results, his post did mention a desire to avoid “doom scrolling” – a term used for the act of constantly consuming news online.
